News Summary

Democrat Ken Salazar has defeated Republican Peter Coors, scion of the Adolph Coors Company, in the hotly contested U.S. Senate race in Colorado, the Associated Press reported Nov. 3.

Salazar, who is the state attorney general, becomes the first Hispanic U.S. senator in more than a quarter century to be elected.

During his campaign, Salazar, a fifth-generation Colorado rancher, focused on creating jobs, increasing education funding, and strengthening homeland security.

Republican Coors, whose great-grandfather founded the beer brewing company, stressed his business experience and a need for lower taxes, small government, and a strong defense. He also endorsed lowering the legal drinking age.
