U.S. Olympic Committee Criticizes Athletic Governing Body October 20, 2003
News Summary
Following news that several high-profile track and field athletes tested positive for steroids, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) criticized the work of its Track and Field governing body, the Observer reported Oct. 19."The United States Olympic Committee has to take the responsibility and leadership to solve this problem, because we are not satisfied with the action that has been taken, to date, by USA Track & Field (USATF)," said Bill Martin, acting president of the Olympic Committee.
The USOC threatened to dismantle the three-member athletic panel unless it gets tougher on drugs and doping.
"If all this turns out to be true, it's even more clear than ever that USATF is totally out of control," said Dick Pound, head of the Montreal-based World Anti-Doping Agency. "I don't want to make it sound like the United States is the only [nation] doping. It's not. But this capacity for doublethink and denial is becoming a joke."
