UNH Alerts Parents to Alcohol, Other Drug Problems September 4, 2003
News Summary
In an effort to reduce alcohol and other drug problems on campus, officials at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) in Durham, N.H., have introduced a new parental-notification policy, the Associated Press reported Aug. 31.Currently, a letter is sent to parents when Durham or campus police make an arrest. Under the new policy, the parents of students cited for an alcohol or other drug offense by residence-hall directors and other internal sources will also receive a letter from the university.
"We're looking to partner with parents at a point where they can work with their son or daughter to look at issues around alcohol and drugs early on," said Anne Lawing, senior assistant vice president for student and academic affairs. "We hope, and will find out, whether this has an effect in reducing the number of alcohol-related offenses."
According to Lawing, the letter would outline the complaint and urge parents to get involved by calling a telephone number for additional information.
