Scottish Drug Courts Yield Good Results August 13, 2003
News Summary
Officials are pleased with the results of a two-year pilot program for a U.S.-styled drug court in Glasgow and Fife, Scotland, the Glasgow Evening Times reported Aug. 12.Since November 2001, the Glasgow drug court has handled 129 cases. According to drug-court coordinator Moira Price, individuals who were placed on court order responded well to drug treatment. She added that the number of offenders had also declined following the establishment of the drug court.
"We are committed to tackling drug misuse and to following approaches that can be shown to work -- approaches that break the cycle of drug dependency and crime," said Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson. "Halting the revolving door of repeat offending among those who have committed crime to fund their drug habit is extremely important if we are to rid our communities of the menace of drug crime."
Jamieson is expected to decide soon on whether to continue the drug court.
"We will continue to monitor the success of the pilots in Glasgow and Fife and if they continue to yield positive results we will consider their establishment in other parts of Scotland."
