News Summary

The city of Goose Creek, its police department, and the Berkeley County school district in South Carolina are being sued in federal court by 17 students of Stratford High School over a Nov. 5 drug raid in which the students were held at gunpoint, the Columbia State reported Dec. 6.

The lawsuit claims that police and school officials terrorized the students when conducting the drug search. No drugs were found in the raid. The suit also said the raid violated students' constitutional rights.

According to the students, police stormed into the school, with several officers pointing guns in students' faces.

"I share the concern that many members of our community have that children shouldn't have to go through those types of tactics or procedures," said Dwayne Green of Charleston, one of the students' attorneys. "I think there is a general concern that no one would want that to happen to their children."

The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount of money for damages and an injunction against future drug raids. In addition, the lawsuit seeks charges of assault, battery, and false arrest.
