Methadone Clinics Embraced in Appalachia January 6, 2003
News Summary
While other communities have opposed methadone clinics, towns in the Appalachia region have welcomed them to treat residents with OxyContin addiction, the Associated Press reported Jan. 6.To address the OxyContin epidemic, 10 methadone clinics have recently opened in mountain communities that previously had none. Additional clinics have also opened in other cities that serve central Appalachia, including Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia.
"OxyContin abuse has been so devastating. It's the most serious drug problem that's ever hit the region, and that's why people are more amenable to having something like this in their communities," said sociologist Roy Silver.
