Limos Targeted in Prom Drinking Campaign June 12, 2003
News Summary
Drinking in limousines has been a big part of prom night in the wealthy suburbs of Westchester County, N.Y. But this year, limos will be banned from the proms at a number of area schools, the New York Times reported June 6.Limousines will be prohibited from this year's senior prom at Scarsdale High School. Instead, seniors will have to be dropped off at school by their parents, attend a pre-prom party organized by the PTA, and then board buses along with faculty chaperones to the prom site.
The new restrictions were put in place after a September homecoming dance that resulted in numerous students arriving intoxicated. Five were hospitalized for acute alcohol poisoning.
In addition to Scarsdale High School, limousines were banned for the first time in Rye and Valhalla. Like Scarsdale, the high schools had serious alcohol-related problems this year at school-sponsored events.
