News Summary

The Canadian government is putting into place an interim plan that would allow people to obtain marijuana for medical reasons, the New York Times reported July 10.

Currently, several cities in Canada have "compassion clubs" that distribute marijuana to patients who have a note from their doctor stating that the drug can help their medical condition.

Under the interim plan, the government would distribute marijuana to those with cancer, arthritis, epilepsy, and other illnesses.

The government said the marijuana would come from an underground laboratory located in an old mine in Flin Flon, Manitoba. Officials plan to distribute the drug through doctors.

Several hundred people are expected to benefit from the interim plan.
