News Summary

A Florida community has introduced a unique way for fellow drivers to keep tabs on convicted drunken drivers, the Associated Press reported Sept. 23.

The bumper stickers read, "How's my driving? The judge wants to know!" Each sticker contains an identification number for the offender, and a toll-free number for other drivers on the road to call if they suspect drunken driving.

"We want to influence people to correct their behavior rather than just use this as sort of a monitoring system," said Escambia County Judge William White.

The program is receiving mixed reactions. Defense lawyer Richard Alvoid is opposed to it, saying, "I see this as providing very little deterrent. Punishment should be enough rather than also shaming people."

Insurance adjuster Doug Meyers, on the other hand, sees value in the program. "If people are embarrassed, they shouldn't drink and drive," he said.
