Britain Considers Workplace Drug Testing July 18, 2003
News Summary
Research from the Independent Inquiry into Drug Testing at Work shows that employers would be willing to test their employees for drug use if productivity wanes, the BBC reported July 17.The inquiry revealed that very few companies currently test their workers for illegal drugs. However, four out of five employers said they would if employees using drugs were affecting business production.
The inquiry was conducted to determine whether there was a need for workplace drug testing, and to present models for the best way to implement such a program.
"There is growing pressure on employers to carry out workplace drugs testing but little evidence or guidance to help them decide if, when, and how they should do it," said Ruth Evans, chairwoman of the panel that conducted the study. "Our inquiry will examine the legal, ethical and economic implications, and recommend a transparent framework for employers considering drug testing at work."
