News Summary

The Alabama House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill that would allow first-time DUI offenders to continue to drive -- if they install equipment that prevents them from driving drunk, the Associated Press reported June 10.

Currently, first-time DUI offenders lose their driver's license for 90 days. Under the measure sponsored by Rep. Priscilla Dunn (D-Bessemer), offenders would be allowed to drive if they agree to install a device that measures their blood-alcohol level.

The equipment requires the driver to blow into a monitor. If the blood-alcohol level is above the legal limit for driving, the vehicle won't start.

Dunn said her bill enables offenders to continue working and supporting their families.
