News Summary

Following misconduct incidents involving alcohol, the U.S. Air Force Academy has tightened its alcohol policy for cadets, the Associated Press reported Sept. 13.

The revised policy requires a three-month conduct probation for alcohol violations. The probation period could also include confinement to the base and enrollment in a rehabilitation program.

Under the policy, a second violation would call for an apparance before the Military Review Committee and could lead to expulsion.

"While the public may tolerate college students who drink to excess, they demand more from Air Force professionals," said Commandant Brig. Gen. John Weida.

The stricter policy comes after an Air Force inquiry found that 40 percent of the 40 cadet-on-cadet sexual assaults investigated in the past decade involved alcohol.

"Alcohol abuse is not and will not be tolerated," Weida said. "Crimes will be prosecuted."
