News Summary

A record number of smokers have entered Taiwan's "quit and win" contest, which boasts several large cash prizes, the Central News Agency reported April 26.

To date, 10,000 smokers have entered the contest, aimed at helping people stop smoking. The number of participants is a record high for a single quit-smoking drive in Taiwan.

The contest is open to anyone age 18 and older who has smoked for at least one year. The contest features various cash prizes that total $42,857. Contestants also will be eligible for a global $10,000 prize drawing. Another $2,860 will be awarded to the oldest participant who stops smoking.

The rules of the contest require contestants to remain smoke-free for four weeks. A non-smoking partner signs up with the contestant to offer support and encouragement. Winners of the contest must take a lab test to confirm their abstinence from tobacco.
