News Summary

UST Inc., the leading U.S. manufacturer of snuff, has asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for permission to declare its products a safer way to consume tobacco, the Wall Street Journal reported Feb. 6.

The company backs up its claim by saying that even though the U.S. Surgeon General found that snuff "is not a safe substitute" for cigarettes, some researchers say that snuff has less risk of adverse health effects than smoking.

Snuff is the only growth market for tobacco in the U.S., with UST expecting profit growth of 10 percent a year until 2005.
