News Summary

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is aggressively lobbying the U.S. Congress to prevent the passage of a bill that would lower the national beer tax by 50 percent, Substance Abuse Funding News reported April 23.

The bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives would reduce the per-barrel tax on beer from $18 per 31-gallon barrel, or 33 cents per six-pack, to its pre-1991 level of 15 cents per six-pack. The measure is backed by the beer industry.

In addition to MADD, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the National Association of Governors' Highway Safety Representatives, the Consumer Federation of America, and the San Diego County Youth Council oppose the measure and are lobbying for its defeat.
