News Summary

The Johnson Institute is shifting its focus to advocacy and addressing systemic issues surrounding addiction treatment and prevention, Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly reported Feb. 4.

Since its inception in 1966, the Johnson Institute focused on grantmaking, awarding funding to projects that addressed addiction.

According to Johnny W. Allem, the new president of the Johnson Institute, the organization is moving its offices from Minnesota to Washington, D.C., and will serve more of a public-policy role.

"We feel that the coming decade is one of opportunity for the enhancement of public attitudes as well as access to treatment and addressing stigma," said Allem.

Allem said that the Johnson Institute would work as a facilitator, bringing different groups together through various vehicles. Although the institute will no longer be involved in grantmaking, it will assist other organizations in locating funds and sponsor seed money for projects.
