News Summary

A proposed constitutional amendment that would prohibit indoor smoking in Florida workplaces has been cleared for consideration by state residents, Reuters reported April 3.

The amendment includes exceptions, such as retail tobacco shops, designated smoking guest rooms at hotels and other public lodging facilities, stand-alone bars, and private residences unless they are being used for child care, adult care, or health care.

The amendment was approved by the Florida Supreme Court and could be placed before voters this fall.

"This is a great victory for the public's right to breathe clean air," said Martin Larsen, volunteer chairman of Smoke-Free for Health, an Orlando-based group organizing the effort. "The voters will now get a chance to finally decide for themselves this vital public-health issue."

The tobacco industry, gas-station owners, and the Florida Restaurant Association oppose the proposal.
