News Summary

With a 18-3 vote, the Delaware Senate approved a measure that would ban smoking in bars, restaurants, hotel lobbies, and other indoor workplaces, Reuters reported May 15.

The Senate passed the bill without amendments exempting bars and casinos. "This is going to have an impact that's not going to be appreciated by a number of people," said Sen. James Vaughn, who voted against the bill.

The bill moves on to Gov. Ruth Ann Minner, who is expected to sign it into law.

"It will cause us to lose some revenue in the sales of cigarettes, but on the other side it will save us a great deal of money when it comes to health-care costs," Minner said.

The anti-smoking measure is one of the toughest in the nation.
