News Summary

Major-league baseball players agreed to a proposal that would require them to be checked for illegal steroids starting next year, the Deseret News reported Aug. 8.

Under the agreement, players would be subjected to one or more unannounced tests in 2003 to determine the level of steroid use in the sport. If the test results show "insignificant" use, a second round of tests would be implemented in 2004 to verify the results. If more than 5 percent of the tests came back positive, players would be randomly tested for two years.

"We had an obligation to bargain on it. It was a serious issue," said Donald Fehr, head of the players union. "It took a lot of time and effort and thought."

The union declined to say whether any penalties would be levied against players who test positive for steroids.
