News Summary

Voters in the state of Washington approved a ballot initiative that would increase the tax on a pack of cigarettes by 60 cents, the Associated Press reported Nov. 6.

The increase brings Washington's cigarette tax to $1.42, the highest in the United States.

Beginning Jan. 1, the total cost of a pack of cigarettes could rise to more than $5 in some places. The additional tax revenue, estimated at $135 million a year, will be used to support expanded enrollment in the state's health plan.

"This is a pretty clear sign from voters that expanded access to health care is important to them, and trying to keep kids from smoking is a priority for them," said Nick Federici, government-relations director for the state chapter of the American Lung Association.
