News Summary

A rally in Minnesota, aimed at celebrating National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, called for greater awareness of the costs of addiction and the importance of treatment programs, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Sept. 30.

The rally, held on the steps of the state Capitol in St. Paul, was organized by Dan Griffin, coordinator for the St. Paul-based advocacy group Recovery Works.

Griffin, who has been in recovery for seven years, said the rally was a reminder to people "that we have to deal effectively with our number one public-health concern."

Speaking at the rally were St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman, Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.), who introduced the legislation designating September as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, and U.S. Rep. Jim Ramstad (R-Minn.), who himself is in recovery.

"This country should be making a commitment to recovery," Coleman said. "We're all touched by it."
