Faith-Based Prison Dorm Includes Treatment Program August 28, 2001
News Summary
The Florida Department of Corrections has started a statewide system of faith-based prison dormitories that provide specialized services to religious inmates, the Associated Press reported Aug. 24.When the $4.5 million initiative is complete, 400 inmates will live separately from other prisoners and attend religious services and study, specialized counseling, and a mandatory daily devotional period.
In addition, the inmates receive counseling for alcohol and other drug problems, and are taught work skills.
Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Michael Moore said the program is still too new to judge its success. But he said studies have shown that two-thirds of inmates who don't receive structured counseling, in particular addiction treatment, will commit new crimes after they are released.
