News Summary

Britain's Home Secretary David Blunkett said marijuana laws should be eased so that police can focus on harder drugs, the Associated Press reported Oct. 23.

"Cannabis would remain a controlled drug and using it a criminal offense, but it would make clearer the distinction between cannabis and Class A drugs like heroin and cocaine," said Blunkett. "It is time for an honest and common-sense approach focusing effectively on drugs that cause most harm."

Blunkett stated his position before a House of Commons committee meeting. Under his plan, marijuana would be classified as a "Class C drug," the same as anabolic steroids. With the "Class C" classification, those possessing marijuana would not be subject to arrest. Currently, marijuana has a "Class B" classification, with a five-year maximum prison sentence for simple possession.

Britain is in the midst of a political debate about marijuana, with all three major political parties calling for a review of cannabis laws.

A law change would require Parliament's approval.
