News Summary

An ordinance being proposed in New Berlin, Wisc., would prohibit teens from carrying matches and lighters in schools, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Oct. 12.

Under the measure proposed by Common Council President Liz Kaminski, students who are caught with matches or a lighter would be fined $60 and face school detentions or suspension.

Mayor James Gatzke said the proposed ordinance would add more weight to an existing state law that prohibits minors from smoking or using tobacco products. In addition, the measure would address the problem of smoking in schools.

"It at least eliminates the likelihood that they're going to smoke at school," he said. "And I would hope the kids would then see the error of their ways."
