News Summary

A New York jury ruled that tobacco makers were not responsible for the illnesses suffered by an ex-smoker, the Dow Jones News Service reported June 27.

The Brooklyn, N.Y., jury handed down the verdict in the case of Clyde Anderson, who sought $1.5 million in compensatory damages. Anderson, an ex-smoker, filed a lawsuit against the tobacco industry for causing his lung cancer and emphysema.

The case marked the first individual smoker's liability lawsuit to go to trial in New York.

Following the verdict, tobacco company stocks rose.
