N.J. Launches Two Efforts to Reduce Smoking October 31, 2000
News Summary
New Jersey has introduced a phone hotline and web site to help smokers, especially young adults, to quit smoking, the Bergen Record reported Oct. 27.One initiative is the New Jersey Quitline. Smokers calling 1-866 NJ-STOPS receive free smoking cessation counseling and resources. Similar information is available through the Internet, via New Jersey Quitnet.
"These programs won't work just because they're available. Smokers have to take the first step," said New Jersey Governor Christine Whitman. "They have to take a shot at breaking free from the nicotine habit. They have to log on or call."
According to Whitman, tobacco use is responsible for 13,000 deaths each year in the state. Health Department figures show that smoking among the state's 18- to 24-year-olds increased by 6 percent between 1998 and 1999.
The hotline and Internet site are the state's first treatment initiatives funded by the nationwide tobacco settlement.
