New Cigarette Designed to Cut Cancer Exposure October 3, 2000

A new cigarette called Advance is designed to reduce smokers' exposure to cancer-causing toxins, the Associated Press reported Oct. 2.The cigarette was developed by Chester, Va.-based Star Scientific, Inc.. According to company officials, Advance has the same nicotine level as other cigarettes, but contains fewer tobacco-specific nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are believed to be among the most powerful cancer-causing agents in tobacco and cigarette smoke.
In addition, the cigarette has a charcoal filter to reduce intake of toxic gases such as carbon monoxide.
Advance is being test-marketed in Richmond, Va., and Lexington, Ky.
