MADD Responds to Bush's DUI Conviction November 6, 2000
News Summary
The head of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) was disheartened to hear that Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush was convicted in 1976 for impaired driving, Reuters reported Nov. 3.Millie Webb, president of MADD, said she had hoped Bush learned a lesson from his conviction. "We hope that the experience had an impact on his life and helped him to realize the devastation that can result from getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. We recognize that people can change," said Webb.
Bush, who said he stopped drinking 10 years after his arrest, was arrested for drunken driving at age 30 nears his parent's home in Kennebunkport, Maine. He pleaded guilty, paid a $150 fine and had his drivers license suspended for 30 days.
Webb said Bush supported anti-drunk driving legislation in Texas, where he is governor.
