News Summary

Voters in Mendocino County, Calif., approved a measure that would allow residents to cultivate up to 25 marijuana plants each, the Associated Press reported Nov. 13.

The measure, which passed with 58 percent of the vote, is the first such ballot initiative in the United States to pass. The measure faced no organized opposition.

Despite the measure's passage, state and federal laws against marijuana still apply.

"There are people, when we catch them they're going to give that, 'Why are you guys doing this to us' line," said Sheriff Tony Craver. "I'm worried about the frustration and heartaches it's going to cause."

The region is known for producing a particularly potent marijuana crop, estimated to be worth nearly $1 billion a year.
