News Summary

The recent presidential debate at the University of Massachusetts in Boston demonstrated how companies are trying to use the debates to get their message out and highlight their brand names, the Boston Globe reported Oct. 2.

Anheuser-Busch, for instance, set up several booths on the UMass-Boston campus, including a 2000 Presidential Debate Canteen tent featuring foosball and ping-pong tables prominently displaying the Budweiser logo. In the media center, Anheuser-Busch handed out free Budweiser and snacks to journalists.

In addition, several informational stations were set up around the campus, displaying pamphlets that publicized the benefits of beer, attacked "unfair" beer taxes, and called on the government to "avoid interfering" with beer drinking.

The beer company, which is paying the entire costs of the Oct. 17 debate in its hometown of St. Louis, Mo., also displayed signs for its "responsible drinking" web site.
