Weeklong Anti-Drug Event Forms Young Leaders July 28, 2006
Communities in Action The Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project, a weeklong anti-drug workshop held at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., brought together students from over 100 Virginia schools and community groups, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported on July 27.
Groups of four students and one adult spent the week developing prevention programs to implement when they returned to their communities. Participating students also learned how to offer peer-to-peer assistance for problems like self esteem issues and bullying.
Students that return in future years can become youth leaders, junior staff and interns at the program.
The program was founded in 1984 and has been coordinated by the Virginia Center for School Safety of the Department of Criminal Justice Services since 2002.
