Training Program Joins Youth and Police June 16, 2006
Communities in Action The Cops and Kids program of Somerville, Mass., held its 24th graduation ceremony on May 24 for over one dozen students, ages 11 to 14, the Somerville Journal reported on June 8.
The 8-week program, a collaboration between the Somerville Police Department and the Somerville YMCA, aims to foster relationships between youth and police officers.
Participating students receive mediation training and learn positive alternatives to violence and substance use through recreational and educational activities.
This ceremony was the program's 24th over the past 9 years. So far, over 440 students have graduated from the program.
Program staff includes a YMCA program coordinator, Somerville police officers, and Somerville High School peer leaders.
Training for peer mediation and drug and alcohol awareness are provided by the Community Corporation's Mediation Program and CASPAR Youth Services.
