Prevention Program Hears Student Concerns in Connecticut June 9, 2006
Communities in Action Farmington FOCUS, the local prevention council of Farmington, Connecticut, will host a series of prevention programs for eighth graders and their parents this month, the New Britain Herald reported on June 8.
The programs will be presented by Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD), a prevention organization whose educators are all former substance users.
Students will have the opportunity to speak confidentially with the FCD educators to ask questions or voice concerns.
'[FCD] will work with the school and see what the needs are here,' said Ginny Wolf, Farmington FOCUS co-president. 'That's very valuable for the kids.'
On June 14, FCD will present a forum titled, 'Prevention Works: The Middle School Years,' to teach parents and residents about substance use prevention and awareness.
FCD will also present educational programs to the eighth graders at Irving A. Robbins Middle School.
'These presentations will be age appropriate for middle school students and we will have them come to the high school in the fall and to West Woods Upper Elementary School in the winter,' said Wolf. 'The school does a great job through the Health Department but a lot of times it just doesn't hit home with the kids. This is coming at it from a different point of view.'
