The Adams County 4-H Fair in Indiana was designated the 'Substance Abuse Awareness Fair' to publicize the efforts of two local prevention groups, the Substance Abuse Council and Anti-Tobacco Coalition, the Decatur Daily Democrat reported on July 25.

'This is the first time that there has ever been a special theme day representing a social need like this at the fair,' said Barry Humble, coordinator of the two councils. 'We're extremely pleased that the fair board could see the tie-in with health issues and these social issues.'

Youth attending the fair could drive a small course wearing alcohol-vision goggles to understand how much alcohol impairs driving ability.

Adults could learn about the county's growing 'Party Safe Homes' network of parents willing to chaperone alcohol-free parties for young people.

Council members volunteered to serve food at the fair as a show of gratitude for the chance to set up informational activities and displays.

'We hope that this is something that will catch on, that other organizations in the county will want to chip in and help serve at the fair,' said Humble. 'What a tremendous opportunity to promote their causes. It's so visible at the fair.'
