New Halfway House Opens in Indiana August 16, 2006
Communities in Action A new halfway house funded by the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis' Affordable Housing Program and the Harrison County government opened in Corydon, Indiana, the Courier-Journal reported on August 7. The $1 million facility will house 30 men with drug and alcohol problems.
Despite the fact that the house is providing a much needed service, there are some reservations about the location. Some people do not agree with a halfway house opening in a residential area. "I just think there's going to be some issues with crime and issues with vandalism and other things, and I think that's going to be proven out over time," said Aaron Striegel, who knows residents of the area.
The halfway house's director Brian Dearing wants to put local residents' minds at ease. Residents of the facility are "not going to be a threat when they're in here. They're a menace when they're out there," he said. "Get these guys off drugs and alcohol and they can become good citizens of their community."
