High School Grad Supports Treatment Center for School Project June 9, 2006
Communities in Action Kathryn Russell, a recent graduate of Baylor High School in Chattanooga, Georgia, raised over $100,000 for Freedom Counseling Services, a substance use center for women in Lafayette, ABC News Channel 9 reported on June 5.
Russell is 75 percent blind, but 'her vision is better than 20/20 when it comes to helping somebody,' said David Burris, director of the center.
'Baylor has a program called Leadership Baylor and they made us do a senior project,' said Russell. 'So I chose this because I figured it would make a difference in the community.'
Russell met her original goal of $50,000 within 'three or four days,' she said.
The money will be used to turn an abandoned building in West Lafayette into a residential treatment facility for women.
