The Healing Place Showcased in Launch of Statewide Program January 7, 2005
Communities in Action Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher was at The Healing Place earlier this week to launch the development of a statewide system of recovery centers, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported on January 4.The Healing Place, the lead agency for Louisville Demand Treatment!, will serve as a model for the 10 new centers. The Healing Place peer-mentoring program was named A Model That Works by SAMHSA and has already been replicated in Lexington, Ky.
Once Fletcher's plan, called Recovery Kentucky, is implemented, the centers will serve up to 1,000 people at a time who have an addiction but have no resources to pay for treatment. The state will have one center in Louisville, one in Lexington, and at least one in each congressional district.
Centers will be built with $2.5 million in federal tax credits that would have been used for affordable housing. Money from community development block grants and the Corrections Department will be used for operations.
"This is the most efficient program at addressing drug addiction and homelessness," Fletcher said.
Fletcher also hopes to steer some people into recovery instead of jail. He said officials want to work more closely with drug courts in hopes that judges will offer more people the option of treatment instead of incarceration.
