On August 1, Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich signed an agreement with the Baltimore Safe and Sound campaign and Baltimore area businesses to support the More for Maryland initiative, the Washington D.C. Examiner reported on August 2.

More for Maryland will provide Baltimore City parents with incentives to overcome substance abuse and keep their children out of foster care; connect youth offenders with drug treatment and education; and give job training to ex-offenders.

Governor Ehrlich committed $2 million to support the initiative, and Safe and Sound raised $2.3 million with the help of Maryland businesses.

The initiative is modeled after the successful San Diego Substance Abuse Recovery Management System, with the goal of reducing spending on foster care and the prison system. If successful, the program may expand statewide.
