The Sarasota Coalition on Substance Abuse (SCoSA) is forming the North Port workgroup of SCoSA to address the drug abuse problem in the area of North Port, which the Department of Juvenile Justice revealed has the second highest level of juvenile delinquency in the county. The group will hold its first meeting on August 11.

SCoSA, a Demand Treatment! lead agency, intends to recruit a diverse group of concerned officials, educators, experts, and residents to develop a solution to the drug problem in the area.

The new coalition will meet during the next monthly Community Health Action Team meeting held by Sarasota County Openly Plans for Excellence, a nonprofit group that concentrates on local issues.

Lisa Phillips, executive director of SCoSA, says that staffing for the North Port coalition will be funded by the recent $14,860 grant from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice.
