Communities in Action

On Saturday, September 6, 2003, A New PATH (Parents for Addiction Treatment and Healing) and the Mental Health Association in San Diego County presented their fourth annual "It Takes A Community" event.

The gala was a tribute to people in recovery and a celebration of individuals who have helped to reduce stigma associated with substance use disorders. The evening included a silent auction, dinner, an awards ceremony, and entertainment.

Seven individuals were honored for their efforts to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and end discrimination, including Chuck Negron, lead singer of the rock group, Three Dog Night. Negron has written a book, Three Dog Nightmare, to chronicle his descent from wealth and fame to the depths of poly-drug addiction.

Other individuals honored were David Beck-Brown of Arts in Corrections, Donovan State Prison in San Diego; Susan Burton of New Way of Life; Escondido Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler; Marianne McDonald, founder of the Scripps McDonald treatment facility; Dr. Rodrigo Munoz, past president of the San Diego Medical Society, and David Rosenbloom, director of Join Together.

Entertainment after the awards ceremony featured "When Love Rules the World" from the Songs of Hope, Awareness and Recovery for Everyone (SHARE) CD and highlighted pictures from A New PATH's 2004 Faces of Recovery Calendar.
