Officials in Utah have known that mothers using methamphetamine were the group most in need of treatment, but the state lacked any place where moms and kids could recover together. This month, a specialized treatment facility to fill this need will open in Salt Lake County, the Salt Lake Tribune reported on January 15.

The Cottonwood Family Treatment Center will provide a 90-day inpatient treatment program for eight women with up to four children each, and four pregnant women. After completing the program, women will move to intensive outpatient care.

"The treatment isn't just about the mom's recovery," said Susan Mitchell, coordinator of women's treatment services for Valley Mental Health. "They'll work on their recovery as well as the recovery of the family."

Salt Lake County Substance Abuse, the state Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, and Valley Mental Health, a local provider, worked together to open the program. According to Valley Mental Health, 68 percent of the women in treatment for methamphetamine addiction are mothers.

Pat Fleming, the director of Salt Lake County Substance Abuse, said a similar center will open soon in Provo, Utah.
