OxyContin Settlement Funds W. Virginia Addiction Programs September 30, 2008
Funding Tips & Trends
Proceeds from a federal lawsuit against the maker of the prescription painkiller OxyContin will be used by West Virginia officials to fund a statewide media campaign, drug courts and other programs, the Associated Press reported Sept. 4.
The federal case against Purdue Pharma led to a $634.5 million settlement, with West Virginia receiving $44.1 million of the proceeds. Earlier this month, Gov. Joe Manchin appointed the West Virginia Partnership to Promote Community Well-Being as the state's Strategic Drug Plan Commission, which will oversee distribution of the money.
Funds will support a media campaign on prescription drug abuse, four juvenile drug courts, and an early intervention program for drug users.
