Finding, Keeping Volunteers Tough for Nonprofits May 14, 2007
Funding Tips & Trends
The Corporation for National and Community Service says that nonprofit organizations face serious challenges in recruiting and retaining volunteers, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported May 3.
Volunteerism levels remain high nationally, but the study found that one in three volunteers surveyed in 2005 did not continue to give their time in 2006. CNS research and policy development head Robert Grimm Jr. said that many nonprofits don't put enough effort into managing volunteers and recognizing their efforts. Also, he said, too few charities provide the kind of interesting volunteer opportunities that entice people to return year after year to give their time.
In terms of recruiting volunteers, Grimm said that baby boomers, in particular, want to be able to use their skills, not do manual labor. Grimm said it was worth the investment of matching volunteers with the kinds of jobs they want to do, since many also will end up being financial supporters of groups they work with.
