Addiction Field Outlines Budget Requests, Calls for Support July 14, 2006
Funding Tips & Trends
Addiction treatment and prevention advocates have proposed funding targets for the FY2007 budget and are seeking Congressional support as well as urging advocacy by the addiction community.
According to Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), advocates are seeking $1.834 billion for the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant, $400 million for the Safe and Drug-Free Communities program, $205 million for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), $422 million for the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), $1.049 billion for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and $457.6 million for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).
The House Appropriations Committee recently voted to approve the field-recommended funding level for the block grant but not the other programs, and in fact proposed cuts to the CSAT, NIDA, and NIAAA budgets compared to FY2006. The Senate Appropriations Committee is expected to act on the budget measure in the next few weeks.
The Bush administration has proposed eliminating the Safe and Drug-Free Schools program, flat-funding the block grant, and trimming the CSAT, CSAP, NIDA, and NIAAA budgets.
CADCA is urging supporters to contact their senators seeking their support for the field-recommended funding levels.
