Congress' approval of roughly two-thirds of President Bush's proposed budget for 2006 resulted in nonprofits directly or indirectly losing billions of dollars in federal support, the Foundation Center reported Feb. 6.

The findings are the result of a study by the Nonprofit Sector and Philanthropy Program (NSPP) of the Aspen Institute.

The report, "FY 2006 Federal Appropriations Recap: Impact on Nonprofit Organizations" calculated fiscal appropriations to health-service programs will be reduced by $1 billion compared to the 2005, with education programs falling by 3.8 percent, or $2.2 billion this year. Cuts to programs of interest in the areas of environment and arts and culture totaled an additional $100 million.

On the bright side, international aid increased by $366.7 million, and income assistance programs gained another $500 million.
