Funding Tips & Trends
About $19.2 million in grants over four years were awarded by the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for programs to treat alcohol and other drug abuse among juveniles and young adults returning from prison.Eleven grants were distributed under the initiative to 10 states and the District of Columbia; approximately $4.7 million was distributed during fiscal year 2005. The program provides community coordination and alcohol and other drug abuse treatment and re-entry services for juveniles and young adults up to age 24.
"Every year an estimated 100,000 youth are released from incarceration," said SAMHSA director Charles M. Curie. "These grants will...ensure these young people stay off drugs and have the opportunity to live, work, learn and participate fully in their communities."
