Funding Tips & Trends

Citing a lack of treatment facilities, Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher announced the allocation of $9.5 million in state funding to build ten new drug and alcohol abuse centers, the Courier-Journal reported Jan. 4.

Under the Recovery Kentucky plan, funding for the new centers will come from $4 million in federal community-development block grants, $3 million from the state Corrections Department, and an additional $2.5 million from federal tax credits.

Using the tax credits, originally designated for low-income housing, has been the source of some trepidation among advocates for the poor. However, the governor noted that many drug and alcohol abuse patients are also homeless, and badly need treatment services.

The Healing Place, a homeless shelter turned recovery center and leader of the Louisville Demand Treatment Strategy Program, will provide the blueprint for the new centers, which will include low-cost peer counseling with former addicts to speed recovery.
