A Kentucky man is walking across the United States to raise money for a drug-prevention program at a Methodist children's home, Knight-Ridder Newspapers reported Feb. 8.

Dewey Sanders, 67, has worked as a treatment administrator at the Kentucky United Methodist Home for Children & Youth in Versailles for 25 years, and always has dreamed of walking cross-country. "I thought, if I'm going to do this walk, I can't be selfish and do it just for me," he said. "I need to do it for someone else."

To date, Sanders has received pledges totaling more than $20,000 for his planned 3,534 trek. The "Coast to Coast for Kids" walk began in Virginia Beach, Va., and will end in San Francisco, hopefully by June 19. Along the way, Sanders plans to hand out information on a youth prevention program called SIGNALS, developed by the program coordinator at the Methodist home.

"Young kids might have the same dreams at 67 that I have," said Sanders. "But drugs and alcohol stop a lot of dreams. And I've seen kids at 15 or 16 years old who are already burned out."
