Hawaii Looks for Ways to Fund "Ice" Campaign January 16, 2004
Funding Tips & Trends
Hawaiian officials are launching a massive campaign against the sale and abuse of crystal methamphetamine, or "ice," and say that no source of revenue to fund the campaign should be dismissed, the Honolulu Advertiser reported Jan. 13.A legislative task force on ice recommended a major investment in drug prevention, intervention, and treatment programs. Lawmakers are not likely to raise taxes to fund the $21.6-million campaign, but they aren't ruling it out, either.
"We're not sure ... we're going to have the support to raise any form of taxes, but that doesn't mean that we didn't recognize it is a potential source," said Sen. Colleen Hanabusa, a member of the legislative task force.
Other possible funding sources include a rainy-day fund and Hawaii's share of the nationwide tobacco settlement.
