The Salvation Army, which provides addiction treatment along with other services, has received a $1.5-billion gift from the late Joan Kroc, widow of the founder of McDonald's restaurants.

The Associated Press reported Jan. 20 that Kroc bequested the money for use in establishing up to 30 community centers nationally. The centers would be similar to the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in San Diego, which provides both recreation and cultural-arts services to youth.

About half of the money will be used to build the centers, with the remainder placed in an endowment to help support their future operations.
